Profiles

A profile is a bundle of settings that controls how a group of decks behaves — its FSRS scheduling, daily limits, how cards are parsed, and how reviews are ordered. Profiles are mapped per tag, so all decks under #decks/spanish can share one profile while #decks/work uses another.

What a profile controls

  • New cards per day and review cards per day (the daily limits); set a limit to 0 to disable it.
  • Retention target — your recall goal, default 90% (see How scheduling works).
  • FSRS profile — Standard or Intensive weight set, or Trained once you’ve optimized parameters from your own history.
  • Learning steps and relearning steps — the short intervals a new (or lapsed) card steps through before it graduates into long-term scheduling, e.g. 1m and 10m.
  • Header level for parsing — which heading level becomes a card front (H2 by default), or Title to use the filename as the front.
  • Review order — oldest due first, or random.
  • Cloze deletions — enabled by default.
  • Cloze context — hidden or open (see Cloze deletions).
  • Exam settings — whether this profile’s decks are exam-enabled and how exams behave (see Taking an exam for the full list).

How tags map to profiles

When a file is tagged #decks/spanish, DecksMD looks for a profile mapped to that tag. If none is set, the deck uses the Default profile. This means you can:

  • Keep most decks on Default and only override the few that need different behavior.
  • Set a whole subject (every #decks/medicine/... deck) to Intensive at once.

Assign a tag from the Assignments tab of the Profiles modal (below). Assigning to a parent tag cascades to every deck beneath it, unless a child tag has its own mapping.

Everything lives in one modal, opened from Manage profiles in the deck panel (or a deck’s Configure profile action). At the top, an Active profile picker plus New, Duplicate, and Delete let you switch or manage profiles without leaving the modal. Below that are two tabs:

  • Settings — edit the selected profile: name, daily limits, again intervals, card parsing, exams, review order, FSRS, and read-aloud.
  • Assignments — map tags to this profile. Pick a tag and Apply; each mapped tag shows how many decks and cards it covers, with a ✕ to remove it (its decks fall back to the inherited profile). An Effective settings summary recaps what decks using this profile actually get.
